Printed on heavy 100% rag Somerset Velvet Radiant White watercolor paper
"Gin Lane" and "Beer Street" will make great additions to the wall
decor in your entertainment room. They were reproduced from the pages of "The Works
of Hogarth," published by Hurst and Co. probably in the late 1800's based on the
paper and binding. There is no date in the book. Each print comes with a centerfolded
11x17 description from the book printed on 90 lb. linen finish cover stock. The paper size
of each print is approximately 14.5" by 18" with an image area of about
12"x15."
When the plates were first published in 1751 the following poems by the Reverend James
Townley were included:
|
BEER STREET. |
GIN LANE. |
Supposedly Hogarth did the originals of these images with the following purpose:
"As the subjects of these Prints are calculated to reform some reigning vices peculiar to the lower class of people, in hopes to render them of more extensive use, the author has published them in the cheapest manner possible. To be had at the Golden Head in Leicester-Fields, where may be had all his other works."
The two new reproductions along with the descriptions
