William Hogarth (1697-1774) expressed his visual artistic bent in satirical paintings and etchings. Many of his plates were in series that showed the progression of various lifestyles(good gets better; bad gets worse). Although interesting some of his works within a series are too numerous to practically display within a home. Marriage A La Mode is six plates. Industry and Idolness is twelve. The Rake's Progress is eight. The Harlot's Progress is six. Hudibras is twelve and no one knows the poem anymore. Beer Street and Gin Lane make a nice pair for an entertainment room. The Sleeping Congregation makes a good gift for a preacher as does The Bench for a judge.
Reproductions of all of the images in the book - The Works of Hogarth, published sometime in the mid to late 1800's - are available with an approximate paper size of 15x18 to 20. The images average about 12 x 15. They are printed on 100% rag Somerset Velvet Radiant White watercolor paper. Each print (glicee) comes with an 11x17 centerfolded description from the book. Cost is $20 per print plus $3.20 USPS Priority shipping. It should be noted that the images you view here appear to be grayscale; however, the prints look like engravings - lines only. In a true engraving ink is lifted from crevices in a plate by dampened paper pressed into the plate; however, with letterpress printing (the source of the book) the black areas are at the surface of the plate and the crevices contain no ink yielding white. With both processes the image on the plate must be a mirror image of what goes on the paper.

Industry and Idolness really need the descriptions to fully understand the plates. Tom Idle and Frank Goodchild start out as apprentices in the same business.
